Essential Uniforms & Belts

The Gi or Dobok

The traditional uniform (Gi for Karate, Dobok for Taekwondo). These are typically made from durable cotton or reinforced polyester blends to withstand the pulling of grappling or the snapping of high-speed kicks.

Rank Belts

Beyond symbolism, a high-quality belt is stiff enough to hold its knot during vigorous movement while remaining flexible enough for comfort.

Sparring & Protective Gear

Point Sparring Gloves

Unlike bulky boxing gloves, Karate and Taekwondo gloves (often called hand protectors) are lightweight and contoured. They protect the knuckles while allowing the hands to remain semi-open for blocks and strike.

Foot & Shin Guards

In Taekwondo especially, foot protectors with foam padding protect the instep during heavy kicks; slim-profile shin guards fit under uniform pants without restricting movement.

Body Protectors (Hogu)

A staple in Taekwondo sparring, these reversible vests protect the torso from high-impact kicks. Modern versions often include electronic sensors for automated scoring in competitive matches. .

Headgear

Lightweight foam headgear helps absorb impact during head-height kicks while keeping a wide field of vision.

Technical Training Tools

  • Breaking Boards: Natural wood for demonstrations or reusable plastic for practice to train kime (focus) and striking power.
  • Target Pads: Single or double-clapper pads to train kick snap and provide audible feedback for proper technique.
  • Stretching Machines: Specialized leg stretchers commonly used to improve range of motion for high-kick disciplines.
